Boys Sweep Team Titles at Steelmen InvitationalMonday, September 16 2013 - Nikolas Merten
Returning to action after a ten day hiatus, both the frosh-soph and varsity boys teams did so in winning fashion on Saturday, posting victories at both levels during their first trip to the Joliet Central Steelmen Invite in Channahon, Ill.
Led by a personal record performance and commanding win by sophomore Nikolas Merten, the frosh-soph boys squad placed four in the top ten, with three in the top five, to secure the team championship over runner-up Plainfield South. Sophomore Nico Moreno was runner-up behind Merten, also recording a major personal best, while fellow classmates Ethan Barreto (fourth) and Alex Behle (eighth) also turned in their best performances to date. Newcomer Jeremy Adams wrapped up the scoring for the Eagles in the crucial fifth spot, covering his first three-mile race in 17:16. Sophomores Kevin Shannon and Stephen Kruto rounded things out for the "Baby Eagles".
On the varsity side, the top seven harriers cruised to victory on the strength of their pack, posting five in the top fifteen for another decisive victory over a Plainfield South squad. Peter Schaible once again led Jones with a fourth place individual finish, while senior Tony Gonzalez raced to the second spot for the varsity team (tenth), recording a personal best and seventh fastest time in school history. Also scoring for the Eagles were juniors Kyle Maloney (eleventh), Mark Protsiv (thirteenth) and Tony Solis (fifteenth). Protsiv's time also etched his name in the school record books as the tenth fastest time in program annals. Will Sarchet also earned the last individual medal of the day, placing in the twentieth spot.
The boys team also saw success in the open division with an array of strong individual performances in the non-team scored race, placing six runners in the top twenty, highlighted by Daryl Cordova's runner-up and all-time best finish.
