Boys Sweep Titles for Second Straight WeekSunday, September 22 2013 - Connelly-Polka Invitational
The varsity boys held off St. Ignatius for the team championship at the Connelly/Polka Invitational on Saturday, winning a tight team battle with both teams missing key scorers due to the ACT. The race was highlighted by a huge breakout performance from junior Will Sarchet, who placed fourth in 15:40, a thirty-three second personal best. Sophomore Nikolas Merten sealed the deal for the Eagles with a strong finish to capture tenth place in a personal best 16:10, finishing as the fourth man for Jones on the day.
The baby Eagles turned in another 1-2-4 performance despite last week's sophomore champion Nikolas Merten competing at the varsity level. Sophomores Nico Moreno and Ethan Barreto went 1-2 in 16:34 and 16:47, both personal bests. Also scoring for the Eagles were sophomore Alex Behle (4th), freshmen Jeremy Adams (7th) and sophomore Stephen Kruto (9th), who used a strong finish to give the team the win.
Jennifer Geary and Julie Lohman led the lady Eagles with season best performances. Jennifer Geary used a strong finish to capture twentieth in a 20:23, while Julie Lohman used an aggressive start to drastically lower her time from Joliet.
The freshmen Lady Eagles continued their impressive season placing four in the top twenty-five in the girls frosh-soph race. Charlotte Geissler crossed first in a personal best 21:50, followed closely by Emma Wilson in 21:55 and Rachel Jones in 22:01. Fellow freshmen Ciara Greene ran an aggressive race with the top freshmen girls before making a wrong turn near the finish. Despite a wrong turn, Greene still ran a huge personal record of 22:08, taking more than 40 seconds off her time in one week. Sophomore Grace Kilpatrick finished twenty-first, in 22:05 (a personal record), to help the frosh-soph Eagles finish fifth in team scoring.
