Taking home a team trophy in one of the divisions at the prestigous Palatine Invite, "Meet of Champions," for the second year in a row, the boys sophomore squad finished in third place on Saturday in the twenty-two team elite field. The finish follow's up a 2012 third place finish in the varsity boys division, ensuring that the Eagles have now placed as a team in both years of attendance at the meet.
Sophomore Nico Moreno led Jones with a personal best and top-ten finish (ninth), with teammate Nikolas Merten finishing close behind in tenth. Freshman Jeremy Adams, who was moved up to the sophomore level for the day, finished as the third runner for the Eagle harriers, turning in a personal best performance of 16:51 (24th) which was also fast enough to etch him in to the record book with the fifth fastest freshmen time in Jones history. Rounding out the scoring to secure the top three finish were sophomores Ethan Barretto and Alex Behle, while Kevin Shannon and Stephen Kruto each recorded personal bests to finish in the sixth and seventh spots.
The freshmen boys team also turned in a solid performance on the day finishing eighth in the tough field and placing five runners ahead of where Jones' top freshmen runner finished in 2012. The Eagles also saw their first ever individual medalist in the freshman division as Zach Benes led the "Baby Eagles" with his twentieth place finish. Arthur Santoro (34th), Will Moran (38th), Stephen (45th) and Josh Gerenraich (53rd) rounded out the scoring for Jones.
On the varsity level, the Eagles placed eighth, finishing just ahead of Palatine, Barrington and Loyola Academy. Senior Peter Schaible (13th) and Kyle Maloney (29th) were Jones' only two individual medalists in the race, while sophomore Will Sarchet once again turned in a strong performance to finish in the crucial third spot for the Eagles.
